Where Every Bite Tells a Story

Tatte began as a small neighborhood dream — a place where the scent of freshly baked bread would drift into the streets of Washington DC, inviting everyone inside. Our tatte bakery roots run deep, shaped by a belief that great food doesn't need to be complicated, only made with care.

"We wanted Tatte to feel like your second kitchen — familiar, nourishing, and always a little bit wonderful."

From our first loaf to today's full menu spanning breakfast, lunch, and seasonal specials, we've never wavered from sourcing honest ingredients and treating every guest like family. Every morning our kitchen comes alive before dawn, preparing dishes that balance tradition with creativity.

Our Mission & Purpose

We exist to create food that genuinely nourishes — body, mind, and community — through quality, creativity, and care.

Honest Ingredients

We source from trusted local and regional farms and producers. No shortcuts, no filler — just real food made the right way. Our tatte bakery recipes rely on seasonal, traceable ingredients that you can feel good about.

Community First

Tatte is more than a restaurant — it's a gathering place. We support local artists, host neighborhood events, and donate unsold baked goods to community organizations every evening. Washington DC shapes us and we give back to it.

Artisan Excellence

Every recipe is tested dozens of times before it reaches your table. Our chefs train with passion and precision, combining classic technique with bold creativity. We never stop learning and never stop improving our craft.

The Principles We Live By

These aren't words on a wall — they're the daily commitments our entire team makes to you, to each other, and to the communities we serve across Washington DC.

A Decade of Growth & Flavor

From a single counter to a beloved Washington DC institution — here's how Tatte grew, one honest meal at a time.

2012
The First Loaf

Tatte opened its first small counter on I Street NW in Washington DC. With just four tables and a hand-written menu, founder Oren Hopen served house-baked bread, strong coffee, and a handful of Israeli-inspired pastries to the neighborhood.

2014
A Community Takes Notice

Word spread quickly. The tatte bakery became a beloved morning ritual for DC professionals, students, and weekend wanderers alike. A feature in the Washington Post catapulted Tatte into citywide conversation.

2016
Expanding the Menu

Responding to guest demand, we launched a full breakfast and lunch menu featuring shakshuka, grain bowls, artisan sandwiches, and an expanded pastry case. A full-service espresso bar was added, cementing Tatte as an all-day destination.

2018
Renovating the Space

We invested in a full interior redesign — warm wood, natural light, and thoughtful seating arrangements designed to foster connection. The kitchen was expanded to meet growing demand without compromising quality or freshness.

2020
Resilience & Community

During one of the most challenging periods in modern history, Tatte pivoted to contactless ordering, curbside pickup, and community meal boxes. We donated thousands of meals to frontline workers across DC through the Tatte Gives initiative.

2024
Digital & Delivery Launch

Tatte launched its online ordering platform, allowing guests to enjoy our full menu from home. Catering packages and corporate lunch programs expanded our reach across the greater Washington DC metro area.

2026
Today & Beyond

Tatte continues to serve Washington DC with the same warmth and craft that started it all. We're exploring seasonal pop-ups, new menu chapters, and community partnerships — always guided by the belief that good food brings people together.

The Faces Behind Your Meal

Our team brings together chefs, bakers, baristas, and hosts who share one thing: a genuine love for great food and even better hospitality.
